Economically Fabulous: History of Fashion During Economic Crisis

Fashion often reflects one’s identity and can change or adapt during economic crises. History has shown multiple instances of how creativity flourishes in the face of financial downturns.

During the Great Depression of the 1930s, fashion mirrored the economic challenges of the time. Clothing needed to be practical, durable, and affordable. Women embraced a “Make Do and Mend” mentality, repurposing and repairing garments as a common practice.

The stagflation and oil crisis of the 1970s led to instability and soaring energy costs due to disruptions in the global oil supply. In response, people began mixing and matching outfits, repurposing clothing for comfort and affordability. This era saw denim emerge as a fashion staple.

In the early 1990s, rising unemployment, corporate layoffs, and sluggish growth resulted in a recession. Contributing factors included the savings and loan crisis of the late 1980s, the Gulf War (1990-1991), and structural shifts in industries as corporations sought to cut costs, leading to a wave of layoffs. In contrast to the bold styles of the 1980s, the 1990s favored minimalism, with people gravitating toward practicality and understated clothing.

The 2008 financial crisis marked a severe global economic downturn reminiscent of the Great Depression. Consumers became more cautious about their spending, prioritizing affordability, durability, and sustainability over high-end luxury and fast fashion. As a result, brands like H&M, Zara, and Forever 21 gained immense popularity.

Fashion during these crises was not only a reflection of economic hardship but also a form of cultural expression. These periods illustrate our ability to adapt and challenge social norms.

Throughout the 20th century, economic downturns significantly shaped the evolution of fashion. The shift away from high-end luxury and fast fashion is likely to continue in the coming years, as consumers become increasingly aware of the environmental impact of the fashion industry. Brands will need to adapt by focusing on sustainable and ethical practices to meet this new demand.
